Nancy Pelosi Bows Out After Losing House: ‘We must move boldly into the future’
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Will Step Down
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has stated she will step down from her role as House Democratic leader after losing the chamber in the midterm elections.
The long-awaited decision comes after the Democrats fared to hold off the possibility of a red wave in the House and Senate and following an attack on her husband, Paul Pelosi, where he was assaulted in their home in San Francisco last month.
Nevertheless, Republicans will hold a slim majority.
“The Capitol is a temple of our democracy, of our constitution and our highest ideals,” Ms Pelosi proclaimed during a speech on the House floor on Thursday.
“The hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus,” she declared.
“Now we must move boldly into the future, grounded by the principles that have propelled us this far, and open to fresh possibilities for the future.”
President Biden congratulated Ms Pelosi’s historic tenure as speaker on Thursday, according to the White House. Ms Pelosi drafted two versions of her speech on Wednesday night while planning for her political future.
