Stacey Abrams Says Fetal Heartbeats are a ‘Manufactured Sound’
Stacey Abrams Sparks Outrage
Initially pro-life until about 30, Abrams is now a pro-choice advocate. Abrams stated the heartbeats heard in the womb are a ‘manufactured sound’ that men use to ‘take control of a woman’s body.’
Most women do not know they’re pregnant before six weeks of growth. A doctor can detect a fetal heartbeat but not an “actual” one. Abrams claimed there is ‘no such thing’ as a fetal heartbeat at six weeks of pregnancy, striking a blow at the Heartbeat Law.
What is the 'Heartbeat Law?'
The Heartbeat Law does not permit women to get an abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detected, typically seven weeks after conception. The current legislation effectively bans all abortions as most women cannot confirm they’re pregnant by six weeks of development.
Senator Lindsey Adams Lashes Out
US Senator Lindsey Adams clapped back to Abrams, saying she is attempting to ‘change science’ by ‘denying that the baby has a heartbeat.’ Abrams seems to be referring to the technical definition of “heartbeat,” which is ‘electrical activity’ captured on a vaginal ultrasound and used to imitate a heartbeat.
Why is the Heartbeat Law Controversial?
Imitated heartbeats can only be discovered via transvaginal scan before six weeks, and a fetal heart does not fully form until the tenth week of pregnancy. It isn’t until the tenth week an abdominal ultrasound can detect a fetal heartbeat.
The Heartbeat Law is controversial because it is based upon the electrical activity recorded through a vaginal ultrasound and enhanced to appear as a heartbeat rather than founded upon the time it takes for a fetal heart to develop (ten weeks) and captured via abdominal ultrasound.
Abrams Speaks to the Audience and Senator Adams Utters the Last Word
Abrams spoke to the audience, saying, ‘There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks. It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman’s body.’
Senator Adams stated, Stacey Abrams perfectly encapsulates the belief and direction of the Democratic Party when it comes to the unborn — deny science and support abortion on demand up until the moment of birth.’
