New York Mayor Seen As End of “Anti-Police Rhetoric”
New York City Mayor, Eric Adams, a former police officer, swore “to clean up the streets.” His win in the primary was taken as a sign voters are “done with anti-police rhetoric.”
Philadelphia Mayor Cites the Challenges Ahead
Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter said, “We have to disabuse people of this flawed premise that Black and brown people are against the police. Black and brown people are against police abuse.”
Nutter continued, “As Democrats we have to do two complicated things at the same time. We have to ensure public safety and reform the abuses of the criminal justice system.”
Democrats State Their Crime Solutions
Democrats declared their crime solution – “stopping the flow of illegal guns, addressing poverty, reimagining law enforcement, treating addiction” – is easier said than done. In their words, they “are more difficult to convey in a campaign.”
Democratic Strategist Says to Follow Black Mayors Lead
James Carville, a veteran Democratic strategist who helped change the Democratic party’s reputation as “soft on crime” with Bill Clinton in the 1990s, states, “the party would be wise to follow the lead of its Black mayors who are responding to their constituents’ concerns.”
Carville continued, saying, “If you cede something that your voters in particular encounter every day, then you’ve given up. You’ve got to own this or this is going to own you.”
Carville should’ve quit while he was ahead but decided to run his mouth, saying, “Democrats had a good case to make by arguing Republicans were the party of cop-beating January 6th insurrectionists and former President Donald Trump’s lawlessness.”
Let’s not forget it was the Democrats who snuck in the bill to defund the police the night of March 3rd, 2021. Still, Carville validates the Democratic party pointing fingers at Republicans for the January 6th insurrection after he just got done saying, “you’ve got to own this or this is going to own you.”
As we have seen, defunding the police was a total failure in combatting crime. After allowing criminals to reign for almost two years, Democrats are just beginning to rethink their actions without taking responsibility for them.
It doesn’t sound like Carville and other Democrats intend to own this, especially after placing the cherry on top with “The spike we had in crime took place in the fourth year of a Republican presidency, not a Democratic one.” Very nice, Carville. What a way to take ownership.
